NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Dec. 9, 2019) – The American Red Cross is teaming up with WKRN News 2, to encourage everyday heroes to give a gift that can’t be bought in a store – the gift of a blood or platelet donation. Eligible donors are encouraged to roll up a sleeve at the News 2 Holiday Hero Blood Drive Monday, Dec. 16 at the Red Cross Blood Donation Center, 2201 Charlotte Ave, in Nashville and area mobile sites.
As a special thank you for taking the time to donate, those who come to give blood or platelets will receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email, courtesy of Suburban Propane. (Restrictions apply; see amazon.com/gc-legal. More information and details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/Thanks.)
“The holidays are a busy time when many activities pull people away from making an appointment to donate blood,” said Garry Allison, Red Cross Tennessee regional donor services executive. “This creates a greater need for donations during the winter months. We thank WKRN News 2 and our community of heroes for a long-standing tradition of being the lifeline patients need.”
As schedules fill with holiday parties, shopping and fun with friends and family, many blood and platelet donors delay giving. Unfortunately, that may lead to delays in treatments for patients relying on blood. The WKRN News 2 Holiday Hero Blood Drive comes as the Red Cross has an urgent need for all blood types. Blood donors of all blood types, especially type O, are urgently needed to donate to avoid delays in lifesaving medical care for patients.

How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.
