LOS ANGELES (July 23, 2018) — The American Red Cross is calling on Southern California baseball fans to step up to the plate and help overcome a summer blood shortage by donating blood at the 20th annual Angels and Dodgers Baseball Fans Blood Drive. The blood drive will take place Saturday, July 28, at multiple sites. As a thank you, all who come to donate will receive a voucher for two tickets to either an Angels or Dodgers designated home game, while supplies last.*
“We’re asking Angels and Dodgers baseball fans to come out and show support not only for their favorite team, but also for patients in need by donating blood,” said Geri Ostil Hernandez, local market manager, Red Cross West Blood Services Division. “The 20th annual Angels and Dodgers Baseball Fans Blood Drive is a win-win for all – the hospital patients that depend on the generosity of blood donors and the blood donors that give the gift of life.”

Blood donation appointments can be scheduled for the Angels and Dodgers Baseball Fans Blood Drive by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, going online at RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) and using the sponsor code HOMERUN.
This blood drive comes as the Red Cross faces an emergency blood shortage and has issued an urgent call for blood and platelet donors to give now so patients can continue to receive the lifesaving treatment they need. Right now, blood products are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in. More donations are immediately needed to help replenish the blood supply.
Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, including trauma patients, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. There is no substitute for blood, and volunteer donors are the only source.
All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.
