NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Dec. 12, 2018) – The American Red Cross is teaming up with WKRN News 2, to encourage everyday heroes to give a gift that can’t be bought in a store – the gift of a blood or platelet donation. Eligible donors are encouraged to roll up a sleeve this holiday at the Holiday Hero Blood Drive Monday, Dec. 17 at the Red Cross Blood Donation Center, 2201 Charlotte Ave, in Nashville and area mobile sites.
As a special thank you for taking the time to donate, those who come out to give will receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card* via email. (Donors must have a valid email address on file to receive their reward. Visit rcblood.org/GiftCard for restrictions, terms and conditions.*)
“This time of year, medical emergencies which require blood, seasonal illnesses that prevent donors from giving blood and severe winter weather that can cancel area blood drives do not stop for the holidays,” said Tiffany Taylor, external communications manager for the Red Cross Tennessee Valley Blood Services Region. “We appreciate WKRN News 2 for giving back to support the Red Cross in helping inspire the community to give blood to help local hospital patients.”
The WKRN News 2 Holiday Hero Blood Drive comes as the Red Cross faces an urgent need for blood and platelet donors to give blood. Donors of all blood types, especially type O, are urgently needed to give now to avoid delays in lifesaving medical care for patients. Volunteer blood drive hosts are also critically needed to stop the shortage from continuing throughout winter.

How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, from a computer or mobile device. To get started and learn more, visit RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass and follow the instructions on the site.
