NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 17, 2020) – With many schools beginning the year virtually and others limiting those onsite, the Red Cross needs the help of blood donors and blood drive hosts to help protect patient care this fall. That’s why the American Red Cross is teaming up with WKRN News 2 to encourage healthy individuals to help ensure a stable blood supply by donating blood or platelets at the WKRN News 2 Blood drive Monday, Sept. 28 at Red Cross Blood Donation Centers and area mobile drives.
School blood drives normally make up about 20% of Red Cross blood collections, and provide the most diverse blood collection, which is important to ensuring every hospital patient gets the lifesaving blood they need. Between March and September of 2020, school closures and those operating under a phased reopening plan to slow the spread of the coronavirus in the Tennessee Valley Blood Services Region resulted in the cancellation of over 265 blood drives and over 10,620 uncollected units of blood.
“As COVID-19 continues to affect everyday life, people may not be thinking about donating blood or hosting a blood drive,” said Garry Allison, Red Cross Tennessee regional donor services executive. “But blood and platelets are needed daily to help patients battling disease and facing the unexpected. We’re thankful for community partners like WKRN News 2 for stepping up to help promote convenient places for individuals to roll up a sleeve to ensure patient needs will continue to be met this fall.”
In thanks for donating blood or platelets at the WKRN News 2 Blood Drive, all presenting donors will receive a coupon for a free Sport Clips haircut via email several days after their donation. Donors must have a valid email address on record to receive the coupon.
Each Red Cross blood drive and donation center follows the highest standards of safety and infection control, and additional precautions – including temperature checks, social distancing and face coverings for donors and staff – have been implemented to ensure the health of all those in attendance. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at the drive and are required to wear a face covering or mask while at the drive, in alignment with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention public guidance.

How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, schedule online, call 1-800-RED CROSS or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.
