ALAMEDA, Calif. (March 1, 2019) — The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the American Red Cross for a blood drive in memory of Sheriff Charles Plummer. The blood drive will take place Tuesday, March 5 through Friday, March 8, across three counties.
Sheriff Plummer dedicated 20 years of his life to serving his community as Alameda County Sheriff and 54 years total to law enforcement service.
In addition, Sheriff Plummer was a committed blood donor with the Red Cross. Throughout his lifetime, he gave 124 pints of blood, equaling 15.5 gallons. He passed away on March 4, 2018, at 87 years young.
To honor his legacy of giving, the community is invited to give the gift of life in his memory at a Red Cross blood drive.
Cynthia Vaughn of the Alameda County Sheriff Office has quoted many as saying, “Sheriff Plummer was a champion for law and order, fairness and justice, and respect for all people.” She went on to say, “Sheriff Plummer led his life by example and his efforts solidified his stance. This memorial blood drive being held is to honor the man and his legacy, as he lives on through the many lives and hearts he touched.”
There is no substitute for donated blood, and every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion. Blood products can help many different kinds of patients including accident and burn victims, heart surgery patients, organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer, sickle cell disease, and many other conditions.

How to donate blood
All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.
