KOKOMO, Ind. (June 13, 2018) — The community is invited to give blood in memory of Deputy Carl Koontz of the Howard County Sherriff’s Department, at a special American Red Cross blood drive held in his honor Thursday, June 21, from noon to 6 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Kokomo.
This is the third blood drive held in memory of Koontz. The first two blood drives resulted in 75 donations. Organizers hope for 75 donations at this drive to bring the total donations made in his name to 150.
On March 20, 2016, Deputy Koontz, 27, was injured in an exchange of gunfire while serving a warrant. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and later died of his injuries. Family and friends of Koontz invite the community to donate blood in his name.
“When we lose someone, we often look for ways to honor them,” said Toni Fox, account manager for the Red Cross Blood Services. “Giving blood in memory of someone is a wonderful way to remember them and also help give life to others who may need the donated blood to survive.”
This blood drive comes as the Red Cross is urging individuals to help ensure blood is never missing from hospital shelves by donating blood through the Missing Types campaign. The goal of Missing Types is to inspire new blood donors and those who haven’t given in a while to give this summer and become a regular blood donor for patients in need in the years to come. For the past four years, new Red Cross blood donors have declined by about 80,000 each year. More blood donors are needed now to fill the gaps.
Every two seconds in the United States blood is needed to respond to patient emergencies, including accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. The Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 blood and platelet donations every day for the patients at about 2,600 hospitals nationwide, including 80 hospitals in Indiana.
