Three donors were thanked in a big way when they came to give blood, platelets or plasma Oct. 21- Nov. 9. They were each randomly chosen as winners of a $5,000 gift card! Kelly Lavigne of California, Lindsey McIntyre of Wisconsin and Sarah Henning of Kansas are the lucky donors.
All who came to give blood, platelets or plasma Oct. 21-Nov. 9, 2023, were automatically entered to a win a $5,000 gift card to treat themselves. Three winners were chosen, one from each week of the giveaway. All who came to give in this timeframe also received a $10 e-gift card to a restaurant merchant of their choice for lunch on the American Red Cross.
Kelly chose to donate blood with the American Red Cross as a way to give back to the local community.
“The donation I won this prize from was only my third EVER! I had no plans to stop donating before but now the message is clear: helping others out of the kindness of our hearts is its own reward,” Kelly said. “Please consider donating today!”
Lindsey has a deeply personal reason for donating blood.
“Before I was born, my mom had leukemia and without blood transfusions, she wouldn't have survived and I wouldn't be here today,” Lindsey said. “Because of that, I like to donate blood to help other people like my mom.”
Sarah is a teacher who organizes her school’s blood drives as the National Honor Society adviser.
“I started donating blood for the Red Cross in 2001, and I love organizing the blood drives because I have been donating my whole life,” she said. “I think I'm up to 26 lifetime pints.”
Thanks to Kelly, Lindsey and Sarah, and everyone else who helped save lives this fall!
How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, schedule online, call 1-800-RED CROSS or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.
