Las Vegas community makes lifesaving impact by donating more than 160 pints
LAS VEGAS (March 3, 2017) — It’s a safe bet that donating blood can help save lives. Thanks to the Las Vegas community answering the need at this week’s T-Mobile Arena blood drive, it paid off with patients winning in a big way.
MGM Resorts International, News 3, the CW Las Vegas and iHeartMedia (Sunny 106.5 and 93.1 The Mountain)
partnered with the American Red Cross to host the first community blood drive held at T-Mobile Arena Monday, Feb. 27. The drive was a tremendous success, collecting 167 donations and setting a record for the largest Red Cross blood drive in the Southern Nevada area.
“The results of this blood drive illustrate the heroes among us who gave the gift of life for others in their time of need,” said Jim Murren, chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International. “We are proud to work side by side with the Red Cross to help meet the lifesaving needs of our community, especially as the Red Cross marks its 100th year of service to southern Nevada this year. We also appreciate the additional support provided by the drive’s co-sponsors and the team at T-Mobile Arena, as well as the cast members from Cirque du Soleil, Fantasy, Thunder from Down Under and Tournament of Kings who visited with donors at the drive.”
The Red Cross supplies more than 70 percent of the hospitals in Henderson and Las Vegas Valley and must collect more than 165 blood products each day to meet local patient needs. Patients rely on volunteer donors as the only source of blood for those in need of lifesaving blood transfusions. Blood collected at this drive can help ensure cancer patients, trauma victims, surgery patients and others have lifesaving blood products available when needed. As a thank you, those who came to give blood received free admission to BODIES...The Exhibition inside Luxor Hotel and Casino.
“To set a new record of most units collected is befitting for our 100 Year Celebration of the Red Cross serving Southern Nevada,” said Scott Emerson, Red Cross executive director. “Collecting that many units of lifesaving blood is such a great feat for our community and it really showcases the great things Southern Nevadans do to help each other out.”
Not only did this drive help ensure blood is available for hospital patients, but it also commemorated a century of the Red Cross serving Southern Nevada. The Red Cross of Southern Nevada will continue to offer a number of community events throughout the year as part of the Centennial Celebration.
