From hurricanes to tornadoes, storm season is upon us. While our disaster relief efforts are typically related to shelter, safety and rebuilding, there can also be a need for more blood donors when bad weather hits, but perhaps not in the way you think. With the most active year for tornadoes since 2017 and an above-normal 2024 Atlantic hurricane season forecasted, blood donors are needed now to help ensure hospitals have an adequate blood supply.
Myth: More blood donors are needed to help those injured by wildfires, tornadoes, hurricanes or flooding. Fact: Natural disasters can lead to canceled blood drives and donation appointments, causing delays to scheduled surgeries and procedures. Severe weather can also hinder efforts to collect a sufficient amount of blood donations by preventing willing donors from traveling to blood drives and donation centers. The storms themselves can also cause disruptions to patient care by causing drives to cancel and donation centers to temporarily close. It is critical hospitals have lifesaving blood products on hand for all patients who count on transfusions during these times of crisis. In some of the most-dire situations, medical teams may need to use hundreds of blood products to save a life.
