Laura was inspired by her father to donate blood. “My father was a regular Red Cross donor and instilled the importance of donating blood to the community and humankind,” she said.
Julieta donated blood regularly for years and encouraged people on social media to book appointments. Last year, her best friend of nearly 20 years was battling breast cancer. “During chemo, she often needed transfusions, which made my blood donations feel even more meaningful. Tragically, she passed away suddenly on June 18, 2024, after a short battle with cancer. In my grief, giving blood became a small way to feel purpose again. So, you can imagine my surprise when my next eligible donation date was June 19... just one day after the anniversary of her passing. I booked it immediately,” she said.
Every drop counts toward a strong blood supply, and the American Red Cross urged donors to add giving blood, platelets or plasma to their summer plans. As thanks, all who came to donate in June were automatically entered for a chance to win one of two $7,000 gift cards.
