BEND, Ore. (Jan. 6, 2020) — MountainStar Family Relief Nursery and the American Red Cross are encouraging eligible donors to book an appointment to give blood at the upcoming Give Board Books, Give Blood MountainStar blood drive. In addition to lifesaving blood, the community also can donate new or gently-used children’s board books targeting ages 0-3 years in English and Spanish for the children MountainStar serves.
The Give Books, Give Blood MountainStar blood drive takes place at various locations around the area during National Blood Donor Month, a time when the Red Cross urges eligible donors to resolve to give blood or platelets in January. National Blood Donor Month has been observed in January since 1970 with the goal of increasing blood and platelet donations during winter – one of the most difficult times of year to collect enough blood products to meet patient needs.
Formed in 2001, MountainStar Family Relief Nursery is a child abuse and neglect prevention non-profit that helps distressed families maintain a safe and healthy environment for their kids. Today, MountainStar serves more than 450 children and their families each year in the Bend, Madras and Prineville areas.
“This is the third year MountainStar and the Red Cross have partnered for Give Books, Give Blood. We are thankful for this partnership and the many books MountainStar children receive each year. Reading is one of the most important activities a parent or caregiver can do with a child. Ensuring that books are available to MountainStar families is the first step,” said Tim Rusk, MountainStar executive director. “We are grateful for the opportunity to reach new community members and share the impact of our services for vulnerable families across Central Oregon. At the same time, we encourage our supporters to give blood knowing how critical it is in saving lives. Thanks to everyone in advance for coming out to support this event.”
As a special thank-you, those who come to give blood Jan. 1-19, 2020, will automatically be entered for a chance to experience the Super Bowl live.* The Red Cross and NFL have teamed up to offer one winner two tickets to Super Bowl LIV, entry to the official NFL Tailgate, tickets to Super Bowl Experience at the Miami Beach Convention Center, round-trip airfare to Miami, three-night hotel accommodations at The Alexander® - All Suite Oceanfront Resort (Jan. 31 to Feb. 3), and a $500 gift card for expenses. How to donate blood
All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.

About MountainStar
MountainStar was formed in 2001 in response to the community need for comprehensive services for distressed families with very young children. Its services include the Therapeutic Early Childhood Program (TECP) and the Safety Net Program, providing crisis intervention and services to high risk families who are not enrolled in the TECP. MountainStar also provides regular child assessments, home visitations, transportation services, emergency food boxes, services for limited English-speaking families, and a variety of mental health services. It contracts with the Department of Human Services/Child Welfare and Drug Court to provide enhanced visitation services for families who have had their children removed from their custody or are at risk of having their children removed.
In 2013, MountainStar welcomed Juniper Junction Relief Nursery of Madras as a satellite program, and in early 2015 expanded to Prineville, opening the first Relief Nursery in Crook County. MountainStar has just begun serves in Redmond as well. Since its inception, MountainStar has increased the number of children served annually from 34 in the first year, to over 450 children throughout Central Oregon.
