GREEN BAY, Wis. (Oct. 2, 2019) — The American Red Cross urges the community to give more life by donating blood at the Green Bay Packers Give Back Community Blood Drive Nov. 13 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Lambeau Field Legends Club, located at 1265 Lombardi Ave. Suggested entry points are the American Family Insurance Gate, Miller Lite Gate or Oneida Nation Gate. Free parking will be available. This blood drive comes at a time when the Red Cross is experiencing a critical need for all blood products.
This single day blood drive in Green Bay has a goal to collect 400 lifesaving donations. All presenting donors can enter into a raffle for a chance to win great prizes from the Packers and receive a free giveaway item, while supplies last. All donors who present to donate will also receive a mini pie compliments of Pick ‘N Save, while supplies last.
Donors will also be invited to participate in the Holiday for Heroes program. Holiday cards of thanks will be created and later distributed to local military facilities, Veteran’s homes and hospitals, military support groups and shipped to armed forces serving abroad.
“The winter months can be among the most challenging times of year for the Red Cross to collect enough blood donations,” said Laura McGuire, external communications manager, for the Red Cross Badger-Hawkeye Blood Services Region. “Many donors are busy with holiday activities, and inclement weather can force the cancellation of blood drives. Additionally, some donors become temporarily ineligible because of seasonal illnesses. We appreciate the community members for their efforts to help save lives.”
Those with types O, A negative and B negative blood are encouraged to make a Power Red donation at this blood drive. Power Red donors give a concentrated dose of red blood cells during a single donation, allowing them to maximize their impact. During this type of donation, red blood cells are separated from other blood components, and the plasma and platelets are safely and comfortably returned to the donor.
Every two seconds in the United States blood and platelets are needed to respond to patient emergencies, including accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. The Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 blood and platelet donations every day for patients at about 2,500 hospitals nationwide.
How to donate blood
Simply download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, from a computer or mobile device.
