SAN DIEGO, (July 15, 2019) — The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and the American Red Cross are teaming up to host a blood drive during Del Mar’s Family Fun Day on Sunday, July 21, at 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. The Family Fun Day will feature pony rides, San Diego Gulls Slapshot Booth, SoccerCity Speed Kick Challenger, rock climbing walls, bungee trampolines, giant inflatable slides, face painters, game zone, and more, courtesy of Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.
“Del Mar is proud to team up with the Red Cross,” said Craig Dado, chief marketing officer with DMTC. “We look forward to the San Diego community coming together for a great cause and continuing with future blood drives. Together, we can help hospitals patients.”
This blood drive comes as the Red Cross faces an emergency need for blood donors to give now to help avoid delays in lifesaving medical care for patients this summer. Right now, blood products are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in. More donations are immediately needed to help replenish the blood supply.
“We appreciate Del Mar Thoroughbred Club hosting a blood drive at a time when blood donations are urgently needed to help hospital patients,” said Becky Firey Donor Recruitment Manager of the Red Cross Southern California Blood Services Region. “The Red Cross encourages everyone who is able to make an appointment, roll up a sleeve and donate. Family members can enjoy the activities hosted by Del Mar while donors help make a lifesaving difference in our community.”
As a thank-you, all who register to donate for the July 21 blood drive will receive two free admission tickets to the track that day, and a plush racehorse giveaway for children 12 and under, while supplies last. All those who come to donate will also receive a T-shirt, and trackside table for four, including admission, for a future race day, while supplies last.*

How to donate blood
All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.
