The American Red Cross, community leaders and organizations of Tompkins County announced today the Ithaca Community 9/11 Remembrance Blood Drive honoring the victims and heroes of 9/11 will be held on Saturday, September 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County, 50 Graham Road West. The blood drive is co-sponsored by CFCU Community Credit Union and the YMCA of Ithaca and Tomkins County.
This year marks the 15th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Each year tens of millions of Americans and people around the world observe the anniversary of 9/11 by performing good deeds that help people and communities in need.
“Donating blood and giving the precious gift of life is a special way to honor those who lost their lives and the heroes who responded following the tragic events of September 11th, “said American Red Cross Account Assistant Sheila Sullivan. “We thank the YMCA , CFCU Community Credit Union and our community partners for supporting this important effort.
“The Ithaca YMCA and the Red Cross have successfully collaborated for the past 22 years,” said Ithaca YMCA Executive Director Frank Towner.”We believe in the need for blood donations and training for the community. We’ve increased our staff training in CPR, AED, first aid, and lifeguarding using the Red Cross model. Now partnering with CFCU Community Credit Union, we all can make a difference in the lives of our community and beyond.”
Every day, the Red Cross must collect 14,000 blood donations to help support cancer patients, transplant patients, burn victims, trauma patients and others. In the New York-Penn Region, approximately 1000 units of blood must be collected every day to meet the needs of nearly 90 hospitals the Red Cross serves in the Region.
Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood, so regular donations are needed. Blood and platelet donors of all types are urged to give.
To avoid longer wait times, making an appointment is encouraged. To schedule an appointment, visit www.redcross.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS and use sponsor code ITHACAYMCA.
