Sickle cell disease is the most common genetic disease in the U.S., and patients with the disease may rely on regular blood transfusions to help prevent complications such as organ and tissue damage, severe pain, and strokes. It is essential that the blood patients with sickle cell disease receive be the most compatible match possible, from someone of the same race or similar ethnicity.
Today, there aren’t enough blood donors who are Black to help meet this important need. Now more than ever, the Red Cross needs your help. It’s easy to support this important initiative:
- Spread the word through social media.
- Help raise awareness of the need for blood to help patients with sickle cell disease.
- Encourage friends, family members and colleagues to donate blood.
