- Session III: Ongoing Threats to a Stable Platelet Supply – 3:15-5:00 pm EST
This symposium focuses on the pressing concern of Platelet Insecurity. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by blood centers, hospitals, and military services due to unpredictable platelet inventories. The discussions will shed light on various hospital-centric solutions, as well as delve into the persistent threats to a consistent platelet supply. Expert presenters will explore: 1. Techniques to optimize and extend limited platelet inventories. 2. The significance and employment of whole blood derived platelets and cold-stored platelets. 3. The impact of emerging pathogens, mass casualty incidents and climate change on platelet availability. 4. Effects of new cancer treatments on the growing demand for platelets. Our objective is to amplify awareness about the escalating issue of Platelet Insecurity and highlight proactive measures that healthcare professionals can adopt to mitigate this looming health challenge.
