From donor to recipient

My father donated blood regularly when I was growing up. He even earned a bunch of little pins to recognize his efforts. When I was out of college I saw a blood mobile at the local library and decided to give for the first time. Twenty years later, I’m still donating! Some years I’m better than others, but I always try to make time to donate a few times a year. Seven years ago my father was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome. Blood transfusions became a regular part of his life. Every two months he returned to the hospital for a “fill up.” The transfusions prolonged his life and kept him an active part of our family until his death. You never know when your good deeds of the past will save your own life!
