Blood, platelet donations needed daily to respond to patient emergencies

January 9, 2012

Like the emergency room of a hospital, the American Red Cross must be prepared to respond to patient emergencies with blood products 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Through the generosity of donors, the Red Cross can be prepared to do this day in and day out, no matter when or where the blood products are needed.

About every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, so more than 44,000 units of blood are needed every day. Those eligible are encouraged to become a supporter of the Red Cross and their communities by donating blood or platelets this winter.

The Red Cross has reported lower donations than expected since the start of 2012. O blood types are particularly low, but every blood type is needed. Those interested in donating can visit and enter their ZIP code to find the nearest donation center or blood drive then make an appointment online or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
