American Red Cross and Atlanta Falcons Ask Community to "Rise Up & Give Blood!"

July 26, 2011

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Falcons are throwing their support behind the American Red Cross and the tremendous need for blood in light of a critical blood shortage nationwide.  Fans are asked to “Rise Up & Give Blood” at the annual blood drive to be held on Aug. 3, 2011, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Park Tavern in Atlanta.  The blood drive is co-sponsored by CBS Atlanta and Atlanta’s Star 94.

The first 300 presenting blood donors will receive a complimentary pair of tickets to the Falcons pre-season game on Aug. 12 against the Miami Dolphins.  All participants can also enter a drawing to win an authentic Falcons helmet, autographed by Coach Mike Smith, or a pair of roundtrip domestic air line tickets.  Appointments are strongly encouraged.

The Red Cross has responded to more than 40 major disasters across more than 30 states over the past three months, but there’s another, more personal, kind of disaster that can happen to any of us at any time if we need blood and it’s not available.  The Red Cross is reaching out to eligible blood donors, sponsors and community leaders to ask them to recruit people to help meet the needs of local patients, as well as those in communities across the United States.

The Southern Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to more than 120 hospitals throughout the state, including the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, DeKalb Medical Center, Emory Healthcare, Grady Health System, Northside Hospital, Piedmont Hospital and WellStar Health System.  Approximately 1,200 people must give blood and platelets each weekday to meet the needs of patients being treated for cancer, sickle cell disease, blood disorders and other illnesses, as well as accident and trauma victims. There is no substitute for blood and volunteer donors are the only source.

Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to give blood. Please bring your Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID when you come to donate.

Eligible blood donors are asked to please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit to find a blood drive and to make an appointment.
