Red Cross, Buff Whelan Chevrolet partner to help save lives

February 27, 2018

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich.— The top Chevrolet dealership in Michigan continues to partner with the American Red Cross to help ensure blood products are available for those who need them. Buff Whelan Chevrolet invites blood donors of all types to make an appointment to donate Friday, March 2 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 40445 Van Dyke Ave., Sterling Heights.

As a special thank you, everyone who comes to donate will receive a $10-off oil change coupon from Buff Whelan Chevrolet, while supplies last. WOMC 104.3FM and 99.5FM WYCD will broadcast live throughout the blood drive and will give away a variety of prizes to attendees (while supplies last - prizes are non-transferable/not-redeemable for cash). Holiday Pizza will also provide a slice of pizza for all who come to donate.

“Since 2000, this wonderful partnership has resulted in more than 10,000 pints of blood collected,” said Bridget McCormick, Red Cross account manager. “We want to thank the community for helping us hit this milestone and encourage all eligible donors to give the gift of life and help patients in need.”

During Red Cross Month in March, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to join in its lifesaving mission by giving blood.

Since 1943, every U.S. president has designated March as Red Cross Month to recognize how the Red Cross helps people across the country and around the world. Red Cross Month is a celebration of supporters, who are the face of the Red Cross in their communities and bring hope to people facing emergencies

Eligible donors with types O, A negative and B negative blood are urged to make a Power Red donation. Power Red donors give a concentrated dose of red blood cells during a single donation, allowing them to maximize their impact. During this type of donation, red blood cells are separated from other blood components, and the plasma and platelets are safely and comfortably returned to the donor.

How to donate blood

Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit, sponsor code: buffwhelan or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood donors can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive. To get started and learn more, visit and follow the instructions on the site.
