Center fielder Dexter Fowler extending American Red Cross blood drive donations through Oct. 31

After the success of his one-day blood drive in Houston, Fowler to donate $1,000 to the Red Cross for each registered blood donation from Oct. 1 through Oct. 31, up to $75,000.

HOUSTON, Texas (Oct. 1, 2014) – After a successful blood drive in Houston, Dexter Fowler is extending his fundraising efforts nationwide by pledging to donate $1,000 to the American Red Cross for every donor who downloads the Red Cross Blood Donor App, joins Dexter’s Team within the app and donates blood between Oct. 1 and Oct. 31.

Dexter is honored by the overwhelming response he received in Houston, and is excited to continue his efforts to inspire blood donations across the nation. “We had a great turnout in Houston, and I want to now encourage the rest of the country to take part in donating blood to help save lives,” Fowler said. “I want to match blood donations with a monetary donation to the American Red Cross to support their efforts across their country.” 

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, and a single blood donation can help save more than one life. Fowler hopes his $1,000 per donation contribution will motivate blood donations nationwide.

“The Red Cross needs to collect approximately 15,000 units of blood each day to meet the needs of a wide variety of patients,” said Neal Litvack, chief development officer at the American Red Cross. “The need for blood is constant, and we appreciate Dexter encouraging his fans across the country to support our lifesaving mission.”

At the end of October, Fowler will be making his donation to the Red Cross at $1,000 per each teammate within the Blood Donor App who donates blood, up to 75 participants. People are encouraged to download the app at to join Fowler’s team and make an appointment to give blood prior to Oct. 31. To help spread the word, blood donors should tweet using the hashtags #TeamFowler and #DonateNow.
