"Rivals for Life" Civil War Blood Drive Kick Off Event

October 31, 2012

Help honor an eleven-year lifesaving tradition while helping mitigate blood collection shortfall due to Superstorm Sandy.

Oregon State University and the University of Oregon Alumni Associations’ “Rivals for Life” Civil War Blood Drive is kicking off its eleventh season. Once again, both universities will unite with a shared vision of helping to save lives. The statewide blood drive campaign will run November 1 through November 17, 2012 and is sponsored by Oregon State University and University of Oregon Alumni Associations, OregonLive.com, Unitus Community Credit Union, CenturyLink, American Red Cross, and Lane Blood Center. This year, the campaign may help bring in much needed blood products to make up for the blood donations lost as a result of Superstorm Sandy.

WHAT:  A kick off event to celebrate the start of the 2012 Civil War Blood Drive which will include food, fun and healthy competition. See the reveal of the brand new Civil War bloodmobile, sponsored by Oregonlive.com, Unitus Community Credit Union and CenturyLink. All participants are encouraged to wear their favorite school colors and root for their preferred team along with university mascots and cheerleaders. Plus, hear from blood center leadership, our sponsors, enjoy food, drink and drawings for great prizes!

WHY:  Superstorm Sandy is arriving in conjunction with the Civil War campaign and while our weather is mild, residents of the East Cost are experiencing the devastation of the storm surge. Sandy has forced the cancellation of approximately 300 American Red Cross blood drives in 14 states along the East Coast, resulting in a shortfall of approximately 9,000 units of blood and platelets thus far. The Red Cross is urging immediate blood and platelet donations in areas unaffected by this storm.

Fans all across Oregon can help locally and nationally as the Civil War enters its eleventh year. This healthy competition has a rich history; fans, students, and alumni of both schools collectively have seen more than 66,500 presenting donors (6,586 in 2011) to help patients during the two-week drive. Just one donation can help save more than one life. Visit civilwarblooddrive.com for more information and a scoreboard history.
