New Jersey Devils to Host 5TH Annual American Red Cross Blood Drive

March 1, 2012

Newark, NJ – On Saturday, March 31, 2012 the New Jersey Devils will team up with the American Red Cross to host the 5th Annual Devils Blood Drive.

The blood drive is scheduled to run from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm at Prudential Center.

All presenting blood donors will receive a special event vintage New Jersey Devils baseball cap and t-shirt. These items have been created only for those that donate blood during this very special life saving event. Randomly selected donors will also have the chance to win autographed merchandise including jerseys, sticks, pucks and much more. Devils alumni, the Devils Dancers and N.J. Devil will also be on hand to meet with fans who will be making donations.

“For the fifth consecutive season, the Devils are proud to support the American Red Cross and their efforts,” said Jeff Vanderbeek, Chairman and Managing Partner, New Jersey Devils. “Hosting this blood drive at Prudential Center for our fans and members of the local community to participate in is something we feel is an important part of how we try to help New Jerseyans.”

“We thank the New Jersey Devils for helping to save lives in the community, and hope to turn many fans into life-saving blood donors,” said Brigid O'Neill LaGier, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Blood Services Region. “The upcoming blood drive is vitally important to build a supply of blood that will help safeguard against a blood shortage.”

A single unit of blood can help save up to three people. Each year, the Red Cross collects approximately 6.3 million units of blood from nearly 4 million volunteer blood donors. From these donations, the Red Cross distributes around 9.2 million blood products each year, including 6 million red cells to patients at approximately 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers.

All blood types are needed, but there is a particular need for people with negative blood types – O-negative, A-negative and B-negative - to give blood now.

Type O negative blood is always in high demand because it can be transfused to patients with any blood type, especially in emergency situations.   Type O negative donors are needed now to help prevent the Type O negative blood supply from declining further.

A limited number of appointments are available, so make yours today by Clicking Here or calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in PA and NJ), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.  Please bring your Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID when you come to donate.
