Volunteers Needed for Salinas Blood Drives

April 8, 2010

The American Red Cross needs volunteers to work at blood drives held in Salinas.  Volunteers would be asked to work approximately three to four hours once every two months.

As a blood donor ambassador, volunteers would serve in one of two capacities at each blood drive.

Greeters welcome each donor, have them sign in and keep track of appointments and “walk-ins”.  Greeters also help ensure that donors proceed through the process in an orderly and timely manner.

Our other volunteers work in the “canteen area”, where they thank donors, provide them with beverages/snacks and watch for any sign of a physical reaction to the donation – so staff can be alerted if necessary.  These volunteers also provide educational materials and help donors schedule their next appointment.

The Red Cross currently holds three blood drives in Salinas – two high school drives and one community drive, which is held every two months at the recreation center on Lincoln Avenue.  The Red Cross hopes to expand its presence in Salinas by adding a couple more drives in the future.

By volunteering time with the Red Cross, people can contribute to their community's blood supply and change lives, starting with their own.  Red Cross volunteers become part of a group of people who truly make a difference in the lives of others and help people in serious medical need.
