Northern California Region Welcomes New CEO

March 16, 2011

Jeff Meyer has been selected as the new CEO for the American Red Cross Northern California Blood Services Region, effective March 7, 2011.

Meyer has been with the Red Cross in key management positions since 2001, most recently serving as the Senior Director of Finance and Planning for the Western Division, which comprises blood regions in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

"I look forward to working with the community and with the hundreds of dedicated American Red Cross volunteers and employees who help to ensure an adequate blood supply in Northern California every day," Meyer said.

One of Meyer’s key accomplishments with the Red Cross was overseeing a $41.6M project, which included the construction of a 201,000-square-foot facility in the Southern California Blood Services Region.  The project also involved consolidating major functions while maintaining a high level of customer service.

“Jeff Meyer brings outstanding leadership skills, coupled with a deep commitment to volunteerism,” said Red Cross Board of Directors chairperson Patricia Austin, M.D.  “With a passion for our mission and the people we serve, Jeff will ensure excellence in Red Cross service.”

Meyer steps in at a critical time for the blood supply.  The Red Cross has just ended a national appeal for blood donors after harsh winter storms throughout the East, Midwest and South forced the cancellation of more than 850 blood drives since January.

As CEO of the Northern California Region, Meyer will oversee the collection of nearly 95,000 blood donations for patients in 29 Bay Area hospitals.  The region employs more than 300 staff members and hundreds of volunteers in facilities in Oakland, San Jose, Union City, Pleasant Hill, Newark and Pleasanton.

Meyer earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Babson College in Wellesley, MA and an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. He also spent two years in the Peace Corps serving in the West Indies.
