Northern California Region Announces New Medical Director

The American Red Cross Northern California Blood Services Region, which provides blood to 30 Bay Area hospitals, has named Debra L. Callahan, M.D. as its medical director, effective May 24, 2010. As medical director, Dr. Callahan will provide education and assistance with transfusion medicine to hospital staff and patients. She will also act as a resource to blood bank technicians and will work with community pathologists to provide transfusion consultation. Dr. Callahan has 14 years of experience in pathology and transfusion medicine. She most recently served as the associate medical director of transfusion medicine at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Callahan completed her fellowship in transfusion medicine at William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan. She has given presentations on transfusion medicine around the country. She has written a number of publications on blood banking and transfusion medicine. Dr. Callahan has been recognized with several awards for excellence in teaching and several fellowships, including ones from the National Institute of Health and the United Negro College Fund. “We are very excited to have Dr. Callahan assume this pivotal leadership position at the American Red Cross,” said Jay Winkenbach, Region CEO. "Dr. Callahan’s expertise is a natural fit for the director position.” Dr. Callahan is certified in transfusion medicine by the American Board of Pathology. She received her Bachelor of Science and medical degree from Ohio State University. She also holds a master’s degree in anatomy from the University of Michigan College of Medicine.
