Donor Wins $3,000 Gift Card

Northern California Region blood donors are now 2-for-2 when it comes to nationwide American Red Cross gift card drawings this summer.

Glenn Short of San Bruno is the latest winner of the Summer of Stories sweepstakes. He was one of only five donors across the nation to win a $3,000 American Express gift card.

“I was pleasantly surprised,” Short said. “I vaguely remember entering the drawing when I registered at the blood drive, but you never think you will win.”

The winning donation came on July 13 at a blood drive held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in San Francisco. It was Short’s third donation and each were made at blood drives hosted by his church.

“When my congregation sponsors a drive I want it to be a success. So I do my part,” Short said. “I enjoy making a difference.”

Short is well aware of the importance of donating blood and he even offered some words of encouragement for people who have never donated.

“There is no substitute for blood and there is a constant need,” Short said. “[Donating blood] is relatively painless and you get juice and snacks at the end.”

Short is the second winner of the Summer of Stories sweepstakes from the Bay Area. He joins Hayward resident Gonzalo Alvarez, who won a $1,000 American Express gift card earlier this summer.
