Teaming Up to Help Save Lives

December 22, 2009

(Ashley, PA) – December, 2009. The American Red Cross Blood Services Northeast Division is proud to partner with Best Buy this December and ‘give back’ to the blood donors who give so much.  Each presenting blood donor at Red Cross blood drives in Northeast Pennsylvania in December will be entered to win a variety of Best Buy items, including a “40 Sony Bravia HDTV LCD, Apple i-Pod Shuffles, a Garmin GPS system and a digital camera.

“We’re excited to work with Best Buy this holiday season and grateful for their generosity,” says Donna M. Morrissey, Director of Communications, American Red Cross – Northeast Division. “This December, donating blood is not just about giving, it’s about giving back and it’s wonderful to be able to offer this opportunity to our volunteer blood donors.”

The American Red Cross is challenged to collect a sufficient supply of blood during December, as blood donations tend to be lower due to inclement winter weather, holiday travel and the onset of flu season. Blood is an essential component for patient care in area hospitals, and the only source of blood is a healthy, volunteer blood donor. A stable blood supply is needed throughout the holiday season and during the cold winter months.

For more information about donating blood or to make an appointment, call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (800-448-3543) or visit   Individuals who are at least 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Pennsylvania), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.  Identification is required at the time of donation.
