The Red Cross Will Pay Ogden Man’s Mortgage Payment

March 4, 2011

Val Klemm, an electrical engineer at Hill Air Force Base (HAFB), is the winner of a drawing which was part of the American Red Cross’ Home is Where the Heart Is promotion in January.

During January 2011, the Red Cross conducted the special promotion to encourage blood donations during a hard-to-collect time of year.  In January, all presenting donors at blood drives and blood donation centers in Utah were eligible to enter a drawing to win a prize.  The prize was to have the Red Cross make the winner’s mortgage payment or pay their rent for one month up to a limit of $1,500.

Mr. Klemm was excited to be the winner and explained, “I have been donating since 1993, starting when I was living in Las Vegas, NV.”

Klemm noted that he did not specifically donate because of the contest.  He said, “I had planned on donating anyway at that time at work because my coworker was organizing a blood drive at HAFB.  But the drive ran into scheduling problems so I decided to go to my usual donation point, the Layton Blood Donor Center. It is very nice to have a fixed donation point close by where all of the employees are professional and friendly.”

He said, “I feel very fortunate to have been selected in this drawing, I have never won anything like this before.”

JaLae Thompson, donor recruitment manager for the Red Cross in Utah, said, “We are happy for Mr. Klemm and pleased with the continuing support for blood donations that we get in the region.  The Red Cross often conducts promotions to encourage blood donations.  Information can be found at”

Donor eligibility involves minimum age, weight and health requirements, and presentation of a donor card or positive ID upon donation.
