Las Vegas performers set to make appearances as show of support for blood drive attendees

LAS VEGAS (Feb. 19, 2018) — It’s a safe bet that donating blood can help save lives. The American Red Cross is wagering that the Las Vegas community will answer the need.

For the second year, the Red Cross has partnered with MGM Resorts International to host a community blood drive Thursday, Feb. 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., at T-Mobile Arena, located west of the Las Vegas Strip near New York-New York, at 3780 South Las Vegas Blvd.

The Red Cross needs to collect more than 165 blood products each day to meet the needs of Henderson and Las Vegas Valley hospitals. Patients rely on volunteer donors as the only source of blood for those in need of lifesaving blood transfusions. Blood collected at this drive can help ensure cancer patients, trauma victims, surgery patients and others have the blood products needed.

“We expect the blood drive to be an engaging and successful event,” said Shelley Gitomer, vice president of Corporate Philanthropy and Community Engagement for MGM Resorts International. “We are proud of our generous employees, who give so much to the community. In 2017, our employees donated 800 units of blood during 26 American Red Cross blood drives held at our properties. We are proud to honor their commitment by hosting such an important community event.”

Complimentary parking will be available to blood drive participants at the Self-Parking Garage at New York-New York Hotel & Casino (4th Level) with access off Frank Sinatra Drive. In addition, as a show of support for the drive and donors, Las Vegas performers also will be on hand to make appearances. All those who come to donate will be entered into a drawing to win two tickets to one of the following ticketed events --- WNBA game at Mandalay Bay Events Center, Demi Lovato at MGM Grand on Saturday, March 3, 2018 or Paul Simon at MGM Grand, Sunday, May 27, 2018*.

Blood donors with all types are urged to make an appointment to give at the blood drive at T-Mobile Arena. Blood donation appointments can be scheduled by using the sponsor code tmobilearena through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, online at or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Blood drive attendees are invited to join the conversation on Twitter by tagging @TMobileArena, @RedCrossBloodLC and @snvredcross and by using the hashtag #TMABloodDrive.

How to donate blood

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, from a computer or mobile device.
