Annual Battle for Blood Returns to North Township

Township Trustee Frank J. Mrvan sponsors friendly competition to help boost blood supply

Battle lines are strategically drawn as first responders roll up their sleeves in preparation for the annual Battle for Blood in North Township.

The Battle for Blood will take place on Thursday, June 27, from 8 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the Wicker Park Clubhouse in Highland. Come to donate and receive a coupon for a free pint of Culver’s Frozen Custard, an American Red Cross t-shirt, and refreshments.

The annual North Township Battle for Blood will pit five communities against each other to see who can contribute the most blood. Communities include:

·         East Chicago

·         Hammond

·         Highland

·         Munster

·         Whiting

“Because blood donations typically decrease in the summer, the Red Cross is grateful for the support of local first responders and the entire North Township community that battle to help maintain the blood supply,” said Sharyn Whitman, CEO for the Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross.  The goal of this year’s battle is to collect 80 pints of blood.

Every day the Red Cross needs 39,000 pints of red blood cells in order to help meet the needs of patients across the United States.  “We hope everyone from the North Township community will roll up their sleeves to donate blood and show their support of these local heroes,” said Whitman.

How to Donate Blood

To schedule an appointment to donate please call 1 -800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit for more information. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in Indiana and Ohio), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.  Please bring your Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID when you come to donate.
