Supermodel Niki Taylor Joins the American Red Cross and Nexcare Bandages to Show that Helping Save Lives is Always in Style

The Red Cross partners with the Nexcare give program to thank and encourage blood donors

with a new fashion-inspired bandage collection.

In 2011 alone, nearly 6 million people across America may require a blood transfusion.  With no substitute for human blood, those in need rely on the kindness of donors. Through their generous actions, these blood donors prove how one person can make a difference in the lives of many, as one blood donation can help save more than one life.

To raise awareness, the American Red Cross, NexcareTM Bandages, and Supermodel Niki Taylor announce the third annual give program. This nationwide initiative thanks blood donors and encourages others to give.  The program kicks off on World Blood Donor Day, Tuesday, June 14.

New for 2011, Nexcare will be giving away a collection of five fashion bandages inspired by the latest runway trends and emblazoned with the word “give” to demonstrate how doing good looks good too.  This collection will feature the vibrant, fashionable and trend-focused designs of chevron, plaid, gingham, zebra, and “classic”, further demonstrating how helping to save a life is always in style. These Nexcare give bandages will be distributed beginning June 14, 2011 and will be available while supplies last.

Taylor’s dedication to the cause stems from her own experience as a patient.  In 2001, Taylor was in a near-fatal car accident and required more than 100 units of blood.  She credits her survival to the donors and doctors who helped save her life.

“As someone who owes her life to donors who gave blood to help someone they didn’t even know, I think giving blood is a critical community service that cannot be overlooked.  Currently, however, only about eight percent of those who can give do so each year,” said Taylor. “Through the Red Cross and Nexcare give program, I hope to educate people about the impact each person can have, and help them realize that helping to save a life is always in style.”

“Each day we must collect approximately 500 pints of blood in the Heart of America Blood Services Region in order to help save the lives of patients like Niki who may live here in our own community”, said Shelly Heiden, CEO of the Heart of America Blood Services Region.  “We are thrilled to partner again with the Nexcare give program to thank our loyal blood donors and to encourage those who are eligible to make an appointment to give this June.”

With the support of Red Cross Blood Services Regions, the Nexcare give program inspires people in America with a message of hope and serves as a symbol of this important cause. The focus of the program, World Blood Donor Day, comes at an important time each year. Summer vacations and activities can fill schedules, leaving little time for donating blood. During the summer months blood donations often decrease, while the need for blood remains constant.

The Nexcare give Bandages will be available for free at American Red Cross blood drives and donor centers nationwide as well as online at during the campaign period.

How to Donate Blood

Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.  Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are generally in good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

About the American Red Cross

Governed by volunteers and supported by giving individuals and communities, the American Red Cross is the single largest supplier of blood products to hospitals throughout the United States. While local hospital needs are always met first, the Red Cross also helps ensure no patient goes without blood no matter where or when they need it. In addition to providing nearly half of the nation’s blood supply, the Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster, trains millions in lifesaving skills, serves as a communication link between U.S. military members and their families, and assists victims of international disasters or conflicts.
