Donor Centers and Blood Drives Add Hours to Make Up for Lost Collections after Snow

The Greater Chesapeake and Potomac (GC&P) Region of the American Red Cross is hoping that folks looking to beat cabin fever this weekend will consider giving the gift of life at one of many blood drives and donor center operations opened on Sunday.  The recent snow storms have left the Region with a loss of about 5000 blood and platelet donations, and they are hoping to make up some of that loss this weekend.  The supply of platelets and type O and B red blood cells are particularly vulnerable for a shortage.  Platelets last just 5 days on the shelf, and donor center closures earlier this week have put a huge strain on supply. To help ensure that all patients receive the blood they need for survival, the GC&P Region is urging all eligible donors to call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (1-800-448-43543)to schedule an appointment.  Platelet donors may call 1-800-272-2123.

All Red Cross Blood Donor Centers will be open this Sunday.  Donors are asked to call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (800-448-3543) for hours and to schedule appointments.  Several community blood drive sponsors have also stepped forward to offer additional blood drive locations on SUNDAY, February 14, 2010:
