Wichita, Kansas – June 26, 2011 – This Thursday, the American Red Cross Blood Services – Central Plains Region is hosting its third tweetup where people will also donate blood. It’s called the #RWYBleedup, and people can follow along @RedCrossKansas or see all the tweets at #RWYBleedup.

If you own a smart phone, like to tweet or are always checking in to see what your Facebook friends are up to, you should definitely attend the #RWYBleedup this Thursday, June 30. Meet at Noon for a pre-bleed lunch at Brooklyn’s Chophouse & Brew Tavern, 6200 W. 21st. St. N. Or join the group at the Cargill Learning Center, south of the main Sedgwick County Zoo entrance, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. If you plan to attend lunch, please R.S.V.P. to J.D. Patton. If you plan to give blood, please make an appointment!

This will be the third event of its kind for the Central Plains Region, the first Bleedup was held on Feb. 18, 2011 – after severe weather caused the cancelation of several blood drives. The second event, Bleedup 2.0, was held on April 22, 2011. Together, these events have resulted in 28 units of blood being collected – many from first-time donors. Several participants have also gone on to become much-needed platelet donors. Participants are encouraged to take photos, tweet and share their blood donation experience with people in their networks in an effort to demystify the donation process.

“It is great to see people in our local digital community get behind giving back to people across Kansas,” said Jennifer Keller, communications manager. “We’ve had two successful events so far, and this time it seemed like a good idea to combine it with our big Zoo event.”

Everyone who comes out to donate during the Red, White & You Community Blood Drive, including the #RWYBleedup, will receive acommemorative T-shirt (see photo at right), a ticket for free admission to the Zoo, and $4.50 entry per person to the Zoo for immediate family members. These discount tickets may be used through Monday, July 4, 2011. All presenting donors between June 30 and July 4 will also be eligible to win a $1,000 gas card. Learn more about Red, White & You – June 30 thru July 2.
