Red Cross and Armstrong Shank Host Wichita Bleedup

Wichita, Kansas – Feb. 14, 2010 – If you are not one of the 10 to15 million active users on Twitter, you’ve probably never heard of a tweetup– a gathering where people meet in person to hang out, learn about social media and even live tweet an event.

This week, the American Red Cross Blood Services – Central Plains Region is adding a new twist to the traditional tweetup. The organization is hosting the first Wichtia Bleedup this Friday, Feb. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wichita Blood Donor Center, 707 N. Main. Wichita tweeps are invited to meet at Red Cross, donate blood, then socialize and eat cookies and juice in the Refreshment Area.

“I’ve been thinking about hosting something like this for a long time, but I needed to reach a point where there was enough local support.” said Jennifer Keller, communications manager. “My goals are to introduce people to the process of giving blood, and help Red Cross make up for units we weren’t able to collect during last week’s snow storm.”

Red Cross has partnered with local agency ArmstrongІShank to make the bleedup happen. Armstrong-Shank is celebrating its 30th anniversary by doing 30 good deeds this year. Staff at the agency volunteered for Meals On Wheels last month, and now the agency will be encouraging its staff and clients to donate blood. ArmstrongІShank will also provide volunteers to work at registration, escort donors and also serve refreshments.

“We thought helping with the Wichita Bleedup would be a great way to encourage our staff to do good things in the community,” said J.D. Patton, director of internet marketing. “Hopefully, we can also encourage other businesses to think about hosting a blood drive at their location or sponsoring a day at the Wichita Blood Donor Center.”

Red Cross invites people in Wichita and the surrounding area to consider donating blood at Friday’s Wichita Bleedup from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Everyone who is eligible is urged to make an online appointment to give blood in the Wichita Blood Donor Center. Appointments can also be made by calling 268-0835 or 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Walk-ins are also welcome at the Wichita Blood Donor Center, 707 N. Main.

Follow the event on Twitter at #bleedup or Red Cross Blood Services – Central Plains Region on Twitter @RedCrossKansas.

As an added incentive, all presenting donors at Friday’s Bleedup will receive a specially designed Elvis-themed rock and roll T-shirt. Plus, will be entered in the Ultimate Elvis Sweepstakes.
