Red Cross offers two grand prizes to December blood donors

UPDATED - Dec. 20, 2010

Winter weather often causes delays and cancellations for schools, work and community events.  But it also means cancellations of vitally important blood donation opportunities.

Since the beginning of December winter weather has forced eleven blood drives to be canceled, which means the Red Cross was not able to collect more than 467 blood donations it was counting on.  With a 10 percent dip in donations overall since Dec. 1, the Red Cross is asking for more holiday season blood donors.  In exchange, those who roll up their sleeve to donate can enter to win two great prizes including a grand Easton shopping spree or a Sugar Bowl travel package for two.

  • The first prize, a $1,000 shopping spree at Easton, includes a free overnight stay at the Hilton at Easton.  Those who come to give blood through Dec. 31 can enter for this prize.  Last December, Stephanie Crigger, of London, Ohio, won the Easton shopping spree for her blood donation.   For more details on this promotion CLICK HERE.
  • The second prize, a Sugar Bowl package for two, includes two tickets to the Jan. 4 game to watch the Buckeyes take on Arkansas in New Orleans, plus a pre-game party, hotel accommodations at the Ritz Carlton New Orleans, transfers and airfare departing Jan. 2 and returning Jan. 5.  Those who come to donate can enter for this prize through Monday, Dec. 27.   For more details on this promotion CLICK HERE.

“Each year the holiday season is a challenge for the Red Cross to find blood donors,” said Rodney Wilson, communications manager for the local American Red Cross. “It’s a season of giving and we need individuals to embrace the spirit of the season and give the gift of life – a blood donation.”

The Red Cross encourages everyone to make donating blood a priority this winter. The Central Ohio Region needs at least 650 blood donors a day to meet patients’ needs at 41 area hospitals – regardless of holidays or vacations.  For more information about the prize opportunities, visit
