Holiday Blood Drive Becomes Tradition for Area Family

December 1, 2008

MADISON, Wis. – Celebrate life this holiday season and give blood at the American Red Cross 23rd Annual Holiday Blood Drive on Wednesday, December 24 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Exhibition Hall at the Alliant Energy Center. This year, the Red Cross will also be recognizing the Hendrickson family – long-time blood donors at the Holiday Blood Drive.

Mark and Mary Hendrickson began donating at the Holiday Blood Drive in 1993, and over the past 15 years have only missed the annual event once. In 2000, daughter Lindsey joined her parents as a Holiday Blood Drive donor. When their youngest daughter, Danielle, became eligible to donate blood in 2003, donating blood at the Holiday Blood Drive became a family affair. Every blood donation can help save up to three lives. Throughout the years, the Hendrickson family may have helped up to 123 people through their blood donations at the Holiday Blood Drive.

"The holidays are all about giving and sharing," said Mark Hendrickson. "For us, taking part in the Holiday Blood Drive seemed like something we could support and make a family tradition."

Enjoy a day of great company, including a visit from Santa and music from area musicians, good will and lots of great food like pizza, holiday cookies and treats, sub sandwiches and hot cocoa! Eligible blood donors are encouraged to call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or go to to schedule an appointment to donate blood on December 24. A blood donor card or driver's license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Eligible donors must be at least 17 years old, or 16 years old with a signed Red Cross parental/guardian consent form where state permits, must weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. All presenting donors will receive a t-shirt and have a chance to enter raffles for many prizes. Parking and childcare are free! Scheduling an appointment in advance allows the Red Cross to make donations as convenient as possible for donors who are out and about running last-minute errands.

Everyone has a different reason to donate blood. For the Hendricksons, the Holiday Blood Drive has become a family tradition. Join the Hendrickson family and share your reason for giving. Whatever your reason is for giving, blood donors play an extremely important role to help ensure a safe an adequate blood supply is available during the winter months.
