The American Red Cross is led by the chairman of the board and the president and chief executive officer (CEO).  The chairman of the board of the American Red Cross is appointed by the President of the United States. The chairman leads the board of governors in the governance and oversight of the organization.  The president and CEO of the Red Cross is appointed by the Board of Governors.  The president and CEO executes Red Cross strategies and leads the operations and business activities of the Red Cross.

Bonnie McElveen-Hunter was appointed as chairman of the American Red Cross on June 17, 2004. Ms. McElveen-Hunter is the former U.S. ambassador to Finland (2001 - 2003) and the CEO and owner of Pace Communications, Inc., the largest private custom publishing company in the U.S.

Gail J. McGovern was named president and CEO of the American Red Cross on April 8, 2008. Ms. McGovern held top management positions at AT&T Corporation and Fidelity Investments, and was a professor at Harvard Business School.

Shaun Gilmore

President, American Red Cross Biomedical Services

Mr. Gilmore is President of Biomedical Services. A versatile and experienced executive, Mr. Gilmore began his career at AT&T. He left as President, Northeast States, responsible for AT&T consumer operations across seven states, to join Snyder Communications as President, Direct Services. In 1998, Mr. Gilmore joined Qwest Communications International and served in a number of senior executive positions, including Executive Vice President, Global Business Markets, a multi-business unit, multi-billion dollar organization. Most recently, Mr. Gilmore served as President and CEO of Agilera, Inc., a Denver-based applications software company.

Chris Hrouda

Mr. Hrouda is the Executive Vice President of Biomedical Services.  He is primarily responsible for blood collections, testing, manufacturing and distribution operations throughout the American Red Cross.  Prior to his role as Executive Vice President, Mr. Hrouda served the Red Cross for almost 20 years in various leadership roles in the blood regions.  Mr. Hrouda is a graduate of University of Missouri(BS, Health Science, 1987) where he honorably received Magna Cum Laude and Valedictorian in the Medical Technology Program.
