My husband and I regularly donated blood. July 2012 he wasn't able to donate because his iron was low. After several month's of Dr visits and trying to figure out what was wrong he had a colonoscopy. The result - colon cancer. Surgery was in October and luckily the cancer had not spread to any other organs. It was an aggressive cancer that required chemotherapy. He is on treatment 8 of 12. I would be planning my husband's funeral today if it had not been for our regular donor dates at the Red Cross. Colon cancer is a treatable cancer if it's caught early. We were fortunate because we were regular blood donors. I continue to donate blood and even though I'm saving lives, I think of the life saved through the act of donating blood.
