I first began donating blood in college, back in 1993, and I try to do it regularly. Thank goodness for the reminder calls when they come in, because I often schedule my next appointment through them.
I find this is a cost-free way for me to help someone in need, and it feels good that I am able to donate. I occasionally get deferred due to low iron, but normally I take my supplements for a week prior to my appoinment so that I will be able to do the donation.
I try to recruit friends as new donors, too, and have had some success in the past with that.
