18 years ago mulitple someones donated platelets and my mom was able to live long enough to see the birth of her 3rd (and last) grandchild (she died 2 1/5 weeks after her birth). Her count got as low as 9 and she had to have transfusions every couple of days. If her count made it into double digits we celebrated. Yesterday, 9/11/12, was the 18th anniversary of the day my mom died from breast cancer. It was also the first time my 18 year old daughter donated platelets. We went in together in her grandma's honor. I will continue to donate every 2 weeks. She is looking for more courage, but I am sure she will make it back in soon (we both have needle issues). The gift of my mom at least getting to meet her grandchild is one I hope to be able to repay many times over. The enclosed picture is priceless in our family.
