For years, I wanted to donate blood, but was genetically held back by a thin weight under the guidelines. Lo and behold, when I was in well into my forties, the weight finally came about. A blood drive was held at my employer, and I went for it. What an amazing first time experience. I felt like Wonderwoman! Ever since, I have donated regularly, and am well on my way to one gallon before the end of the year. Donating blood has truly helped me to be more aware of my own health, taking extra steps to ensure I am eligible with good health and plenty of hydration. Perhaps a placebo effect, I feel physically fabulous after each donation. For those who are anxious about their first time, a bit of advice. Sleep well the night before, eat well that day, drink plenty of fluids and ensure you have a good iron level before AND after donating. Not a fan of red meat, I have found many ways to incorporate iron, including supplements when necessary. It IS good, and it FEELS good to help others.
