Donor Stories

Immediately after delivery of her first son, Doreen began hemorrhaging and losing blood. Because of the holiday and an emergency shortage in the blood supply, her doctors had to wait until the last possible moment to transfuse. She received 4 units of O-Negative red blood cell, but only after she had lost over half of her blood. Doreen continued to bleed and had no choice but to leave the hospital anemic because there was no excess of blood.    Doreen had never donated blood before her son’s birth. “I had always assumed that someone else would take care of the problem”, she says about donating.   In 1999, her mother became terminally ill with liver failure. That same year, Doreen was looking for a career change and accepted a job with the American Red Cross. After that, Doreen learned that she needed to do something and donate.   Now Doreen has worked as a DRD Rep for Red Cross in the front lines of educating people and getting people to donate. She has coordinated multiple drives at her church in her hometown and is the forerunner of Pint Size Heroes Program in southeastern Michigan.   Beginning in 2005, the Pint Size Hero program is a community service project developed by the American Red Cross to introduce children to the importance of donating blood. The program encourages students to invite parents, guardians and other adults to give blood on their behalf. “Pint Size Heroes really pulled my heart-strings. I knew that I needed to be educating in elementary and middle schools”, says Doreen. “If I could educate them while they are young, when they get to high school they would be ready to donate themselves because they will understand the need.”

Host a Mini Blood Drive!

Your Organization Could Help Save Lives

Not every organization or business is able to host a blood drive at its own facility.  Smaller organizations and businesses can be part of the Red Cross team by sponsoring a blood drive at a local American Red Cross Blood Donor Center.

The Mini Blood Drive Program is a quick and easy, outreach opportunity for smaller groups. Your group provides the donors and someone to coordinate the blood drive, and the Red Cross provides the place as well as support and publicity materials to help make the drive a success.

For more information or to sign up for the Mini Blood Drive Program please contact Patty Godin at 313-549-7042 or GodinP@usa.redcross.org.
