SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Bloodstock Scholarship Programs
i. $2,000 scholarship drawing available for student volunteers who plan and organize a blood drive between 5/1/`0 - 8/31/10 that collects a minimum of 50 units.*
ii. $1,000 scholarship drawing available for student volunteers who plan and organize a blood drive between 12/15/09 - 1/15/10, and $1,000 scholarship drawing available for student volunteers who plan and organize a blood drive between 5/1/10 - 8/31/10 that collects a minimum of 35 units.*

*To be eligible for scholarship drawing, organized blood drive must be independent of all high school-sponsored blood drives.
Participation Scholarships:
A $500 scholarship will be awarded to students at four schools based on the following criteria:
i. School holds at least two blood drives with the American Red Cross between July - June of any given year.
ii. School has the highest number of donations based on a percentage of the total student population for the year (July - June).
iii. School agrees to name the scholarship recipient (an eligible high school senior pursuing higher education such as colleges, universities, community colleges, technical schools). Student chosen should have participated in the school's blood program as a donor, a recruiter or a volunteer the day of the drive. Student should also have a grade point average of 2.5 or better in high school studies and have demonstrated outstanding personal leadership among his/her peers through support of the blood program.
Individual Scholarships:
Individual scholarships will be awarded to three high school students - 1st place: $1000; 2nd place: $750; 3rd place: $500. Scholarships are based on the following criteria:
i. Student submits a complete application form* along with the following:
1. Official high school transcript
2. Two letters of recommendation from non-relatives who have known the student for at least a year
3. Essay - minimum 300 words, outlining strategies which can be used to encourage blood donations among high school students. Essay must be typed, single spaced and may include visual aids such as graphs, photos, etc.

iii. All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of Red Cross staff and/or volunteers.
iv. Proof of enrollment in an institution of higher learning will be required before an award check will be issued. The check will be payable to the school where the student has offi cially enrolled.
v. The awarding of the scholarship will not be based on sex, race, creed, national origin or sexual orientation.
AWARDS & RECOGNITION
Red Cord Program for Students:
The Red Cord Honors Program is designed to recognize students who have made the choice to participate in the life-saving act of blood donation at least three times during their senior year with the American Red Cross. Students in the Red Cord Honors Program are awarded red honor cords that they may wear during their high school graduation activities with their school's permission. Any student at a high school holding a blood drive with the Mid-Atlantic Blood Services Region is eligible to participate in the Red Cord Honors Program. Eligible students must donate three times during their senior year. Students ineligible to donate blood due to age, weight, or medical restrictions may be eligible by actively participating as a volunteer with their high school's blood drive or another blood drive in the community at least 3 times during their senior year. The school's Red Cross representative will work with the school to track participation during the year and identify and recognize eligible seniors prior to graduation so that they can proudly wear the red cord during their graduation ceremony.

Graduation Recognition for Schools:
Each school and its senior class that holds at least two blood drives per year with the American Red Cross will be recognized at the end of the school year (on Senior Awards Day or at graduation). This recognition will commemorate the graduating class for the school's number of units donated over the course of two or more blood drives during the year.

NOTE: Employees of the American Red Cross and their families are not eligible to participate in the scholarship opportunities. They are eligible for the Red Cord Honors program. To be eligible for the Mid-Atlantic Region Bloodstock Scholarship Program, you must attend a Mid-Atlantic Blood Services Region High School and run your pre-approved blood drive in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
