South Carolina Blood Services Region


Marty Lempres
Vice President, East Blood Services Division

Marty Lempres is the vice president of the East Blood Services Division of the American Red Cross, a role in which he is responsible for operations in 12 Blood Services Regions spanning 17 states, from Maine to South Carolina. 

Prior to this role, Lempres served as a senior leader in Red Cross Humanitarian Services for a year, after 25 years working in financial services. During this time, he led integrated global business units and large functional organizations with industry leaders including State Street, Fidelity Investment and Salomon Brothers, after beginning his career with management consultant McKinsey & Company. 

Lempres has a master’s in business administration from the Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College. 


Michael Chaplo
Vice President of Recruitment, East Blood Services Division

Michael Chaplo is the vice president of Recruitment for the East Blood Services Division, where he works in partnership with Recruitment Process and Planning leadership, key recruitment-related functions and field leaders to drive improvements in how the organization recruits blood and platelet donors.

Prior to this role, Chaplo served as vice president of National Sales for Preparedness and Health and Safety Services (PHSS) with the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C. In this capacity, he brought extensive experience in growing revenue to the nonprofit industry, making incalculable contributions to the evolution and growth of PHSS.

Chaplo is a sales and marketing industry leader with more than 20 years of experience and a proven track record of success. He has contributed immeasurably to the high-tech and telecom industries through his executive tenure with several leading companies, where he developed sales and marketing strategies resulting in extraordinary revenue growth.

Chaplo has a Master of Business Administration in management and finance from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a Bachelor of Science from Utica College of Syracuse University. He has also completed executive education programs at the MIT Sloan School of Management, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Penn State University. 


Sharon Pitt
Chief Executive Officer, Carolinas and South Carolinas Blood Services Regions

Sharon Pitt is the CEO of the Carolinas and South Carolina Blood Services Regions – the largest combined Blood Services Region in the American Red Cross system based on blood collections.

Pitt began her career with the Red Cross in 2004 as the director of Collections for the South Carolina Blood Services Region. Six years later, she assumed the same role in the Carolinas Region, where she was responsible for all aspects of daily collections operations for the region, which provides blood products and lab services to 103 hospitals in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. In this role, she also built and led a team of more than 400 cross-functional staff in whole blood, automated and special collections.

Before joining the Red Cross, Pitt was a registered nurse for 15 years with a range of management roles in acute care and long-term care settings and worked in medical equipment sales.


Ryan Corcoran

Ryan Corcoran
Community Chief Executive Officer, South Carolina  Blood Services Region

Ryan Corcoran is the Community CEO of the American Red Cross South Carolina Blood Services Region, headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina. He is responsible for all Red Cross Blood Service activities in the region, including the collection, processing and distribution of blood components to more than 50 regional hospitals and health facilities. Corcoran is also a member of the Red Cross Biomedical Leadership Development Program.

Before joining the South Carolina Blood Services Region, Corcoran served as interim chief operating officer for the Northeast Pennsylvania Blood Services Region.

In 1992, Corcoran began his Red Cross career in account management in the Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Blood Services Region and progressed to the national sector, where he was named national hospital accounts manager in 2010.

He is a graduate of the University of Alabama with a Master of Science in biology with an immunology focus and a Bachelor of Science in microbiology.


Courtney Hopkins, D.O.
Medical Director, South Carolina Blood Services Region

Dr. Courtney Hopkins is the medical director for the South Carolina Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. She joined the Red Cross in January 2009 as medical director for the Southern Blood Services Region. Previously, she served as an assistant professor for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Emory University. 

Hopkins received her medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed an internship in internal medicine with the Mercy Healthcare System in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was a resident in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and University of California, Los Angeles. She also completed a fellowship in transfusion medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and University of California, Los Angeles. 

Board certified in clinical pathology and transfusion medicine by the American Board of Pathology, Hopkins has served on committees for the College of American Pathologist and American Society for Apheresis. She has also co-authored articles appearing in Transfusion, Pediatric Blood Cancer, and Immunohematology.
