South Carolina Blood Services Region

E. Mary O’Neill, M.D.
Vice President, East Blood Services Division

Dr. Mary O’Neill is Vice President for the American Red Cross Blood Services, East Division, which includes 12 blood regions from Maine to South Carolina.  Prior to her appointment in 2004, Dr. O’Neill served as CEO and Medical Director for the former New England Region.

Dr. O’Neill has a medical degree from the University College Cork Medical School in Cork, Ireland. She was a Resident in anatomical pathology at The Mallory Institute of Pathology in Boston, Massachusetts and clinical pathology at the University Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. O’Neill served as the Registrar for the Blood Transfusion Service Board in Cork, Ireland and was a Fellow in clinical chemistry at the University Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. O’Neill is board certified in Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine. She has served as a Teaching Fellow and Assistant Professor of Pathology at Boston University School of Medicine and as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Pathology at Dartmouth Hitchcock School of Medicine in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

Dr. O’Neill currently serves on the Board of Directors for both the AABB (formerly the American Association of Blood Banks) and the National Blood Foundation. 


Michael Chaplo
Vice President of Recruitment, East Blood Services Division

Michael Chaplo is the Vice President of Recruitment for the East Division where he works in partnership with Recruitment Process and Planning leadership, key recruitment-related functions and field leaders to drive improvements in how the organization recruits blood and platelet donors.

Prior to this role, Michael served as Vice President of National Sales for Preparedness and Health and Safety Services (PHSS) with the American Red Cross in Washington, DC.  In this capacity, he brought extensive experience in growing revenue to the not for profit industry, making incalculable contributions to the evolution and growth of PHSS.

Michael is a sales and marketing industry leader with more than 20 years of experience and a proven track record of success.  He has contributed immeasurably to the high-tech and telecom industries through his executive tenure with several leading companies, where he developed sales and marketing strategies that resulted in extraordinary revenue growth.

Michael holds an MBA in Management and Finance from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and a Bachelor of Science from Utica College of Syracuse University. He has also completed executive education programs at MIT Sloan, Wharton and Penn State University. 


Sharon Pitt
Chief Executive Officer, Carolinas and South Carolinas Blood Services Regions

Sharon Pitt is the chief executive officer of the Carolinas and South Carolina Blood Services Regions – the largest combined blood services region in the American Red Cross system.

Sharon began her career with the Red Cross in 2004 as the Director of Collections for the South Carolina Region. Six years later, she assumed the same role in the Carolinas Region, where she was responsible for all aspects of daily collections operations for the region, which provides blood products and lab services to 103 hospitals in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. In this role, she also built and led a team of over 400 cross-functional staff in whole blood, automated and special collections.

Before joining the Red Cross, Sharon was a Registered Nurse for 15 years with a range of management roles in acute care and long term care settings and worked in medical equipment sales.


Ryan Corcoran

Ryan Corcoran
Community Chief Executive Officer, South Carolina  Blood Services Region

Ryan Corcoran is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross South Carolina Blood Services Region, headquartered in Columbia, SC. He is responsible for all Red Cross Blood Service activities in the region, including the collection, processing and distribution of blood components to more than 50 regional hospitals and health facilities. Ryan is also a member of the American Red Cross Biomedical Leadership Development Program.

Before joining the SC Region, Ryan served as interim chief operating officer for the Northeast Pennsylvania Blood Services Region.

In 1992, Ryan began his Red Cross career in account management in the Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Blood Services Region and progressed to the national sector, where he was named national hospital accounts manager in 2010.

He is a graduate of the University of Alabama with a Master’s of Science in Biology with an Immunology focus and a Bachelor’s of Science in Microbiology.


Courtney Hopkins, D.O.
Medical Director, South Carolina Blood Services Region

Courtney Hopkins, D.O., is the medical director for the South Carolina Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. She joined the Red Cross team in January 2009 as medical director for the Southern Blood Services Region. Previously, she served as an assistant professor for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Emory University. 

Dr. Hopkins received her medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed an internship in Internal Medicine with the Mercy Healthcare System in Philadelphia. She was a resident in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and University of California, Los Angeles, and completed a fellowship in Transfusion Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and University of California, Los Angeles. 

Board certified in Clinical Pathology and Transfusion Medicine by the American Board of Pathology, Dr. Hopkins has served on committees for the College of American Pathologist and American Society for Apheresis and has co-authored articles appearing in Transfusion, Pediatric Blood Cancer, and Immunohematology.
