AMERICAN RED CROSS HONORS DEDICATED, BLOOD DRIVE SPONSOR GROUPS, INDIVIDUALS DURING ANNUAL LUNCHEON

ATLANTA - Arthur Stoltz, an 85 year-old blood donor and blood drive volunteer, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Red Cross Blood Services Southern Region during its annual Sponsor Recognition Luncheon held Oct. 16 at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel in Atlanta, GA.
Stoltz, who volunteers at blood drives held at his local synagogue, is a Jewish War Veteran whose total donations stand at 119 pints of blood, one pint short of the 15-gallon mark. Because he is unable to again give blood, the Southern Region also honored Stoltz's lifelong commitment to helping save lives through blood donations by awarding him a 15-gallon pin.

Twenty-nine other awards were handed out to individuals and sponsor groups from around metro Atlanta whose volunteer efforts and blood drives helped the region collect more than 105,000 pints of much-needed blood
during fiscal year 2006-2007. The sponsor groups include several high schools, colleges, businesses, and community groups.

Kristi Cole, whose 5 year-old son, Brody, gets a blood transfusion every three weeks, addressed the group, thanking them for the work they do which helps not only her son, but others in need of lifesaving transfusions. John Bachman, news anchor for WSB-TV, served as master of ceremonies for the event.

Mario Sedlock, donor recruitment director, American Red Cross Blood Services, Southern Region, thanked the group for their steady support of the organization's mission to help save lives and encouraged them to keep up the good work.

The American Red Cross could not collect the blood needed by thousands of patients in the 130 hospitals it serves across the Southern Region without the help of willing volunteer blood drive sponsor groups. Blood donations are needed every day to help victims of accidents recover from injuries, and by patients fighting serious blood disorders and various cancers.

Most healthy people age 17 or older, who weigh at least 110 pounds, can donate blood every 56 days or platelets every two weeks, up to 24 times each year. The American Red Cross Blood Services, Southern Region needs approximately 1,200 people to donate blood each weekday to meet the needs of hospital patients.
