Pittsburgh Penguins and the American Red Cross Score One Life

With great thanks to all of the donors that came out on Saturday, March 10th, the American Red Cross and Pittsburgh Penguins are proud to announce that the 3rd Consecutive Score One for Life blood drive was a success.  A total of 239 productive units were collected, thus helping up to 717 patients. Since the first drive held in February 2011, the Penguins and the American Red Cross have collected a combined total of 1259 units which can be extended to more than 3,000 patients. We thank you for making this possible.

In addition to interacting with Penguins’ alumni members, Ice Crew and mascots, donors were entered in a drawing to win great Penguins’ memorabilia. The following is a list of donors and prizes received:

PITTSBURGH --Fans are encouraged to roll up their sleeves and Score One for Life by participating in this lifesaving effort! The Pittsburgh Penguins and American Red Cross will host a blood drive on Saturday, March 10th from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the CONSOL Energy Center.

In addition to helping to save lives, blood donors will receive a jersey-style Jordan Staal t-shirt, while supplies last, and are eligible to win Penguins memorabilia.  Donors will also have the opportunity to meet Penguins' Alumni members and broadcasters, as well as interact with the Penguins' mascot, Iceburgh and the American Red Cross mascot, the Blood Hound. Penguins' merchandise will also be available for purchase at PensGear, located in the Trib Total Media Lobby.

The Score One for Life Blood Drive has been a Penguins’ commitment to the local community for 20 years. Penguins’ drives have yielded over 10,000 registered donors, whose blood donations have helped up to 30,000 patients in need.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States is in need of blood and more than 44,000 blood donations are needed every day. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia), meet height and weight requirements (at least 110 pounds based on height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Individuals should bring their Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID when they come to donate.  Those with specific eligibility questions should call the Red Cross Donor Client Support Center at 1-866-236-3276.  Many donors are eligible to give blood every 56 days.

The Greater Alleghenies Region directly serves hospitals, patients and donors in a 100-county area in Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, with more than five-dozen blood products and related services, and also supports blood needs experienced by patients elsewhere in hospitals served through Red Cross Blood Services.
