Blood Drive in Memory of Jake Copeland- Cumberland County
RED CROSS HOLDS BLOOD DRIVE IN MEMORY OF LOCAL RESIDENT
The American Red Cross is holding a blood drive in memory of local resident Jake Copeland on August 19. The drive will be held at the Linary Church of Christ at 1244 Old Highway 28 in Crossville, TN from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Jake Copeland was born in Crossville, Tennessee. As a boy, Jake loved farming with his father and doing just about anything outdoors. He believed in living life to the fullest.
Jake attended Cumberland County High School. Years after graduation, he decided to make his passion for the outdoors part of his profession by opening his own topsoil business in Crossville.
On August 18, 2009 Jake was delivering topsoil to client in Jamestown, TN when he was in an accident. The 26-year-old was air lifted to the University of Tennessee hospital. As doctors worked to save Jake, they gave him 70 units of blood. Tragically, Jake did not survive.
To honor her son, Jake’s mother, Margie Hicks decided to hold an annual blood drive.
“If you give the gift of life, it’s like keeping his memory going. He didn’t like a lot of attention, but I think if he knew it would help other people and how many units they gave him, he would want to pay that back,” says Jake’s mother Margie Hicks. “It just warms my heart to know that people are willing to donate blood in memory of my son.”
This year, the blood drive in Memory of Jake is one day after the third anniversary of his death. Hicks says this drive is a bright spot for her during a time of the year that is always difficult.
