Red Cross Partners with Colonial Life Arena to Host
Free Lifesaving Event
First Annual SC Saves Lives will kick-off National Red Cross Month
Columbia, S.C.—Every March, the American Red Cross celebrates Red Cross Month across the country and this year the organization is teaming up with Colonial Life Arena to host the inaugural SC Save Lives event 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at Colonial Life Arena, 801 Lincoln St. in downtown Columbia. The event is sponsored by WIS News 10, WXRY 99.3 FM and The State.
This free event will promote lifesaving techniques by training attendees in Citizen CPR, which is a 30-45 minute hands-only technique. The Red Cross is able to provide this free training through the generous support of Colonial Life Accidental Insurance. This free training is offered to the first 300 people and is not for certification.
In addition to the free training, Colonial Life Arena will be hosting a Red Cross blood drive in their front plaza from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
There will also be multiple booths set up to provide information on the many services the Red Cross offers year-round, including: first aid, CPR/AED, babysitting, pet first aid, volunteer and blood donation opportunities.
All training and blood drive participants will receive free refreshments, giveaway items and the opportunity to win tickets to Disney On Ice presents Toy Story 3 and Michael Jackson The IMMORTAL World Tour by Cirque de Soleil. The first 200 participants will receive a free SC Saves Lives T-shirts. Only pre-registered participants are guaranteed prize packs.
“The mission of the Red Cross is simple—to help people in need, and during this year’s Red Cross month we hope to build awareness of our mission and ensure that our community is ready for emergency situations,” said Scott R. Salemme, regional chief executive officer, American Red Cross, Columbia Region.
In 2011, the Red Cross launched the new Citizen CPR lifesaving training. Also referred to as “hands-only CPR,” the potentially lifesaving technique involves no mouth-to-mouth contact and is best used in emergencies where someone has seen another person suddenly collapse. The hands-only technique increases the likelihood of surviving cardiac emergencies that occur outside medical settings.
