Give Blood and Take Home a Box of Girl Scout Cookies

Charleston area Red Cross partners with Girl Scouts to provide free cookies to blood and platelet donors in July and August

Charleston, S.C., June 21, 2013 – Charleston area Red Cross blood and platelet donors will have a sweet opportunity during the months of July and August to give the “gift of life” and get a free box of Girl Scout cookies.

The cookies are being provided by the Eastern South Carolina Girl Scouts and will be available to all presenting blood and platelet donors at the Mt. Pleasant and West Ashley Red Cross donation centers in July and at all mobile drives during the months of July and August.

"We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with Girl Scouts to thank blood and platelet donors for their incredible generosity with a complimentary box of Girl Scout cookies,” said Ryan Corcoran, chief executive officer for the Red Cross S.C. Blood Services Region. “Girl Scouts and the Red Cross share a common goal to make the world a better place, and this is a great opportunity for our organizations to work together to make that mission a reality.”

The Red Cross encourages people who are in good health to donate so that hospital patients have the blood and platelets they need to make a full recovery. Blood is needed to help treat a variety of patients including accident victims and individuals undergoing surgery and cancer treatment.

The Red Cross South Carolina Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to patients in 54 hospitals. Approximately 500 people need to give blood or platelets each week day to meet hospital demands.

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Platelets can be given every seven days, up to 24 times a year.

How to Donate Blood

Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Platelets can be given every seven days, up to 24 times a year.  Most healthy people who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent) and weigh at least 110 pounds are eligible to donate blood to the Red Cross. Donors who are 18 years and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements. A Red Cross blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification, are required at check-in.
